Cable Types

For some ITAs the cable needed to interface the IFD™ TE to the UUT connectors may need to be a specific cable type and gauge, and so this may need to be carefully selected during the design phase of the ITA.  Also as discussed in previous topics, if SSTDR is planned to be used, cable with a impedance match close to the cable type under test is highly recommended for best results.
Cable routing through the UUT, or to parts of larger UUT, may well be a factor, and cable management is recommended.  Types of cable management that might be consider are:

Ø     Colour coding of cables to help identify routings and to match Test Plan SOPs.
Ø     Cable reels to wind on/off cable for long runs.
Ø     Protective sheathing on areas of the cable exposed to sharp-edges or possible foot-fall.

For VIFD™, using pre-manufactured cables which are likely to be either moulded or open construction, is certainly the fastest way of making an ITA.  Cable type, gauge, the type of interconnection, the type of use and the possible usage are all factors in choosing an ITA cable typeCables can be purchased with 50-pin D-sub connector (male) connectors at both ends and in various different lengths; this provides the basis of two J-connectors in one purchase.

It is recommended that if 50-pin D-sub pre-manufactured cables are purchased in this form, tested using the VIFD™ between J1 and J2 to ensure their integrity before they are cut in half for use in building the ITA is recommended.

Some examples of cables that could be used to build an ITA:

CABLE A
Large heavy duty diameter cable with assembled 50-pin D-sub connector (male) ends.  Good for long-term interfaces workshop/flight line.  Cable strands are easy to work with and less likely to break up on assembly and in-use.

Pt No. 8140 E76328-1
AWM Style 2464
80C and 300 V
24 AWG cores

Approx $100 each for 3m and £5 per meter thereafter (spec on order).

CABLE B
Small diameter cable with assembled 50-pin D-sub connector (male) ends.  Good quality cable and multi-stands available for multiple ground return lines for IFD mode.  Cable has fine strands and needs care during assembly; cable strains should be used.  Good for light workshop use and delicate connections to chassis, computers etc.

Pt No. Tyco Electronics Madison 68KDK00036 68-Core (twisted pair)
Cable Type CL2
CSA Type CMH 13381 Spec.
75C and 300V
28 AWG cores

Approx $75 each for 3m and £5 per meter thereafter (spec on order).

CABLE C
Medium diameter cable with pre-moulded 50-pin D-sub connector (male) ends.  Very high quality, strands are very fine and idea for connecting small components.

Pt No. L-com E258652-C (UL) Type CL2
AWM Style 2919
75C and 300V
28 AWG cores

Approx $80  per cable for 3m (other sizes available)

Other Cables such as L-com and other makes of cables are available.
